Women Build is not just an event; it's a movement. In honor of International Women's Day on March 8th, Habitat for Humanity MontDelco's Women Build 2025 brings women together to uplift one another, foster collaboration, and address the affordable housing crisis in our community. This initiative provides a hands-on opportunity to create lasting change by building safe homes for families in Montgomery and Delaware Counties.
Gather your friends, family, or coworkers to form a team and participate in this transformative initiative! Whether you are a construction expert or a first-time builder, no experience is necessary—just the desire to make a difference. Build days begin in March, so form your team and sign up to raise $5,000 (or more!) today.
If you can't participate in the event, you can still show your support by donating to help the teams reach their fundraising goals!
The Rise of Female Homeownership
Women are making remarkable strides in homeownership despite earning only $0.81 for every dollar a man makes. The homeownership rate among women has increased by over 10% in the last 20 years. Now, women-headed households account for half of all households in the U.S.! This growth highlights the importance of ensuring access to affordable housing and financial security for women and their families.
The Impact of Women Build

Since 1991, Habitat for Humanity's Women Build has united volunteers from all walks of life to build homes and transform communities. Women Build provides participants the tools, skills, and opportunities to make a real impact. Women and children are the most likely to be affected by poor living conditions, and this initiative empowers women to take a proactive role in improving housing stability for families in their communities.
Yessica, a Habitat homeowner, shared how it felt empowering to work with Women Build volunteers to raise the walls of her home. "I felt proud there were only women working that day because it shows that we can do it," she said. "We're capable of doing everything."
History of Women Build
1991: A group of women in Charlotte, North Carolina, completed the first women-built Habitat for Humanity house. This event planted the seeds for Habitat's Women Build program. A handful of Habitat affiliates continue to build homes with women crews.
1997: As part of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton, Kentucky First Lady Libby Jones, and Oklahoma First Lady Cathy Keating participated in a Women Build. This event inspired the idea for Habitat's First Ladies Build.
1998: Habitat for Humanity International formed the Women Build department as it became an official program.

1999–2001: The Women Build department hosted the First Ladies Build. Women governors and first ladies from all 50 states joined Habitat to build houses with families in need.
2003: Lowe's signed on as Women Build's underwriter. Home Interiors and Gifts, Inc. became a major sponsor of Women Build. Since 2003, the program has more than doubled in size.
2006–2007: Women Build's First Families Building Homes Across America united women volunteers with governors' spouses and local and statewide leaders to construct Habitat homes in every U.S. state and the District of Columbia. Fifty-two homes were built throughout the country.
2008: Lowe's sponsored National Women Build Week, held in the days leading up to Mother's Day. In the inaugural year, about 6,000 women volunteers participated at more than 150 Habitat affiliates across the United States.
2009-2017: Lowe's committed $1 million yearly to National Women Build Week, which expanded and gained momentum. By 2018, a record of more than 130,000 volunteers impacted more than 5,000 individuals in combined annual national and international events.
2018: Chico's FAS, Inc. and its family of brands announced a new partnership with Habitat, including sponsorship of Habitat's 2018 Women Build program.
2019–2021: The program continued to grow across international borders. In partnership with Lowe's, Habitat's Women Build Week was created as an annual weeklong event starting on International Women's Day.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Habitat went virtual for International Women Build Week 2021. More than 300 Habitat locations in the U.S., Canada, and India have organized ways for volunteers to get involved virtually to support our mission to raise awareness of women's challenges in accessing safe, affordable housing.
