Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery and Delaware Counties is well-known for its mission of bringing people together to construct, preserve, and foster affordable homeownership and advancing racial equity in housing. But you might be surprised to learn how shopping and donating to ReStore home improvement outlets helps divert 685 tons of refuse from being thrown in landfills.
Habitat MontDelCo’s ReStores, located in Horsham – and reopening in West Norriton this summer – provide our shoppers with new and gently used home improvement products and building materials. From lighting, furniture, doors, windows, appliance, cabinets, and tools, it’s the perfect place to shop for deals on small projects or your upcoming home remodel.
We Put the “Re” in ReStore
ReStore outlets are open to the public just like many other retailers but have a couple of big differences compared to big box stores.
We offer a green-nature system of operating.
When you donate items, you’re REDUCING waste and the need to manufacture new items.
When you shop at ReStore, you’re REUSING things that still have value.
Many items can also be diverted from landfills by RECYCLING them. The store breaks down non-salable items to be recycled or that DIY-ers upcycle into something new.
685 Tons Have Been Diverted From Landfills Since Earth Day 2020
We use a simple formula to estimate the weight of items diverted from landfills. Every dollar in sales equates to 1.3 pounds. That’s about one and a half million pounds in one year since last Earth Day! That’s about the equivalent weight of five blue whales of waste that has been diverted from landfills in this past year alone!
It’s Just Good Business
ReStore Director Michael Mercer explains, “The work we do at ReStore is truly mission driven, and it manifests in different ways for different audiences. Whether it’s collecting items that can help someone getting a fresh start or perhaps venturing out on their own for their first apartment; continuing a legacy by donating treasures per a loved one’s wishes; or simply finding one more use for a piece of furniture via a creative outlet, ReStore helps fulfill all of these missions. Plus, donors feel the reward that they’ve kept items out of the ever-growing landfills.”
The Store that Builds Homes
ReStore is a non-profit. Its goal is to boost what Habitat for Humanity regularly does through its mission. That means that 100% of the funds raised from donations and purchases help build Habitat homes in partnership with families in our community. What about the environment, you ask? Environmentally minded residents and community members will be happy to know that Habitat MontDelCo builds energy-efficient homes in a variety of ways, including installing energy-efficient appliances, windows and light fixtures. It’s truly a win-win-win!
Make Earth Day last all year long
If you have great items to recycle or environmentally-friendly resources to share, we would love to hear from you (reach out on social media, via email, or in the store). We hope you make ReStore a regular shop when buying home improvement items or donating items you no longer need that have value – even after Earth Day and month ends.
